Talk To The Hand

kerrysoccerplaywithkid2.jpg

One of the enduring truths to come out of the recent U.S. presidential election is that John Kerry's handlers should have tried very hard to keep their candidate at least three football fields away from any type of sporting equipment.

Someone put up this entertaining page contrasting Bush and Kerry in similar situations, and it's worth a few chuckles.

Many of the pictures I'd seen before, but not this one; and it does seem a fitting farewell. I laughed out loud.

The "first pitch" photos really illustrate the differences. Dubya has a natural follow-through, while Kerry has a glove that looks like it came straight off the shelf. The rule of thumb for anyone taking the mound for a ceremonial pitch/photo-op will borrow a player's glove for the toss. Judging by the photos shown, I can't tell if Dubta's got a glove or not. Whenever I toss a ball, it feels more comfortable to have a glove...if only I know the ball's going to thrown back to me. If I were tossing a ceremonial pitch, I really wouldn't expect the ball to be tossed back at me.
The photo of the blue-windbreaker wearing Dubya looks to me of him throwing a first pitch in New York during the Yanks/Diamondbacks post 9/11 World Series. If memory serves corect, he threw from the rubber, right to home plate...no bounce. And his follow though is across his body, with him keaning towards first base, anticipating a grounder that he could field with an easy out to first. The corresponding Kerry photo shows JFK-Lite using the classic over the top pitch...more suitable for co-ed three-pitch. And judging by the leg positioning, Kerry seems to have taken a cricket bowler's approach: ie, a running start. This may explain why he's at least ten feet away from the mound. Not ten feet from the pitching rubber. Ten feet from the entire mound itself.

Scrolling down further there is another juxtopositioning of pitching photos (I'd comment on the football passes/catches, but I can't throw a football to save my life...but baseball, I know). Dubya in the Cards jacket is doing another pitching photo-op. Take a look at where the ball is in his hand. He has it "cradled" in the top of his palm. The corresponding Kerry photo features JFK-Lite in the top part of his pitch. The ball is at the top of his thumb and index and middle fingers. That pitch is going high and outside....waaaaay high and waaaaay outside. He's releasing as you would a javelin. And that glove he's wearing looks as broken in as...well, let's just say it don't look like no Rawlings glove.

Still, doesn't explain the trading of Sammy Sosa or the rampant steroid use while under Dubya's tenure as the figurehead of the Texas Rangers....

Yeah, Dubya can throw a ball, ride a bike, chase a stick. I could do all that when I was 5 ;)
