Kneecapping The Troops

I've republished these quotes from the Globe and Mail out of sequence, mainly for my convenience:

[University of Ottawa Professor Amir] Attaran said his interest in the detainee issue began about a year ago when he was asked by the Law Society of Upper Canada to speak at a symposium on torture.

"I asked myself, 'What steps is Canada taking to make sure there will not be torture during our military intervention in Afghanistan?' " He said he ran into a brick wall when he tried to get a copy of the detainee-transfer agreement and that it would have remained secret if he had not persisted in asking questions.

"When I saw it I was very alarmed," he said. "What scandalizes me and what should scandalize this nation . . . [is that] today we are signatories to a treaty under which we do transfer prisoners to the Afghan National Police, self-confessed torturers."

Now what, I wonder, would Prof. Attaran have us do with these prisoners? I doubt he has in mind shooting them on the spot, as we are fully entitled to do, given their status as non-uniformed combatants.

Since handing them over to the Afghan authorities is not an option in Attaran's opinion, are we then to keep them in our custody indefinitely; our soldiers increasingly tied up as glorified jailers? Or should we transfer them to Canada, whence a veritable feast of litigation will ensue by Attaran and his cronies (all underwritten by the government, mind you), trying to gain freedom (and refugee status) for these barbarians.

If Attaran gets his way, expect a quiet message to be propagated through the ranks: Taliban and al-Qaeda die where we find them.

It wouldn't be anything new. Following the massacre of Canadian prisoners by the SS in Normandy, we proved rather difficult to surrender to.

Attaran said his interest in human rights and the accountability of institutions grew out of his immigrant experience and a seminal trip through Africa before working on his doctorate at Oxford.

"There in Africa, in the middle of Angola, it was astonishing to me that young men and women of my age who were just fantastically mentally gifted . . . would never have the opportunity to go to Berkeley, to go to Oxford, UBC, be a faculty member at Harvard, Ottawa.

"They were opportunities I got and they didn't -- just by accident of birth. . . . So it is clear to me that there is something that I have to pay back. That is the foundation of my morality."

Yeah, whatever, you preening jackass. If the Taliban get back in power, too bad that Afghan children won't get those opportunities. Sucks to be them, huh?

Matt:

Attaran has a long history of this BS. I've written three posts on him with one of them detailing his history of insulting the Canadian armed forces. Check it out, and keep writing to discredit this scum.

So basically this Professor re-enforces that mind set that Muslim Nations can't be trusted to respect Human Rights , this was aslo proved by Maher Arar who himself claimed his Homeland of Syria was a violator of Human Rights and tortured people on a regular basis.

Afghanistan is a 99% Muslim populated supplier of illegal drugs and it looks like islam approves this if the end result is harm to the unbelivers or the Christain apes and Jewish pigs .

I do find it to be very ironic that while Syria is deemed so rotten and corrupt by many Muslims and Arabs in Canada , those same people exalt Mr.Arar as one of the Good-Syrians that would never lie even after 18 years of the Sunni Muslim doctrine and having a wing of Hamas in Syria and the Muslim Brotherhood terrorists group that supports Al-Qaelda and Hezbollah.
Tonight is the Dinner for the Arar's "Victory" over the evil Canada and Zionist controlled USA , I wonder if Taliban Jack will be wheeling in the $10million Dollars of OUR money which Arar may end up giving some to CAIR-Canada that is know to have ties to Hamas and Terrorism.
If the NDP gets just one cent of that money we should call an inquiry into why Arar's wife ran for the NDP and why Layton endorsed her knowing her husband we suing Canada for $400'000'000.00 and today settled for only $10.5 Million dollars.

Oh, whatever. Here we have a Canadian who was educated in the best universities around the world, who had a faculty job at Harvard, and who chose to give up that life (and a lot more money) to come back to Canada. Did I mention that he's trying to stop torture committed by our country, and that's as an encore to saving countless kids dying in Africa from malaria (google Attaran and malaria and you'll see)? Sounds to me like we should be nominating this guy for the Nobel Peace Prize, or an Order of Canada. You have to be jealous (or a right-wing blogger) to think otherwise. Welcome back to Canada, Professor, and we need you.

Jason:

This is one of the more ridiculous postings I have seen. Only an idiot would think Attaran is doing this for the money. Any law professor could double his salary overnight by quitting his professorship and practicing law. Could it be that (gasp!) he's doing it because he has morality (horrible!) and the courage to say what he believes? All I know is that it takes balls to say something you believe and that infuriates (literally) a whole damned army on television and in page one of the Globe and Mail. It takes a lot more balls to do that than to be a nobody blogger from Quebec.

Give it a rest, OK? Attaran's fine.

Dave:

"...It takes a lot more balls to do that than to be a nobody blogger from Quebec."

It would take even bigger balls for a Muslim law professor to say that Canadian and other Allied soldiers are the good guys, not the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and that Canadian and other Allied soldiers, having liberated a brutally oppressed Muslim nation, are fighting and dying to give the Afghans a chance to build a free, democratic nation.

(BTW, would this professor really "double his salary overnight by quitting his professorship and practicing law"?

He'd have to give up his tenure-his well paid lifetime guaranteed job, sucking on the taxpayer teat-in order to compete with a lot of other attorneys, most of whom can at least write more coherently than he does.)

"Only an idiot would think Attaran is doing this for the money."

The quality of commenters these days is not what is used to be. Just some hopped-up morons in overclocking. Commenting on something they don't even have time to read. Bleh...
